While every Oriental rug is used differently, every rug should be cared for the same. How often you clean your rug is very much down to you, and how much you use the rug. For you, create a bit of an atmosphere for your carpet-cleaning time: maybe make a mint tea. For your Oriental rug, mix half a cup of carpet shampoo, a tablespoon of vinegar and 4.5 cups of warm water. With your Marigolds on, tea at your side and your rug on the patio, or similar surface, use a gentle brush to clean the rug. Scrubbing will damage the fibres, so use gentle strokes, starting from the corner, brush back and forth vertically, maintaining a consistent pressure across the whole rug. When you’ve finished brushing vertically, do the same thing horizontally. While the rug dries, gently brush the pile, so it’s lying in the right direction.

While you’re doing this check particularly any dark areas for moth damage – loosened fibres where a moth may have been nibbling. Many Oriental rugs can be treated with gentle insecticides to save any further damage.

Keep the rug flat as it dries, and try hard to not touch. When it’s dry, you can gently sweep off any dried dirt or shampoo, leaving the weave soft to the touch.

Regular, gentle cleaning will give your Oriental rug the chance of a very long life, it’s also a great way to give yourself a bit of a timeout from the hectic pressures of modern life. Think about the master who created your rug as you sip your mint tea and stroke away all the dirt your Oriental rug has collected since you last spend time with it.
