Using energy efficient compact fluorescent lights, CFLs, in lamps and lights in your house can offer high quality and high efficiency lighting. CFLs are much more efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs and will live far longer. Today’s CFL bulbs give you intensity and vividness of color that is just as good as, if not better than standard lights.
Even though CFLs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, they are worth the initial cost by saving energy costs in the long run. CFL lamps are now available that have dimmers and work much like incandescent lamps. In most cases, switching light fixtures over to new lighting is as simple as screwing in a new CFL light bulb.
Fitting CFL Bulbs into Your Fixtures
One of the drawbacks of changing over to CFL light bulbs is that they are often much bigger than the incandescent bulbs that most lamps were designed to use. Your table lamps that use a metal harp to support a lampshade may not be long or wide enough to accommodate these larger CFL bulbs. Some lighting suppliers are now offering inexpensive replacement harps that can solve this problem. Often, older lamps and light fixtures are simply unable to be retrofitted with the new bulbs.
The newer bulbs are also quite a bit heavier than incandescent bulbs. This increase in weight can change a lightweight but stable lamp into a top heavy one. When purchasing used lamps that will need to be used with CFL light bulbs, look for wider bases and heavier hardware, as well as the most stable style you can buy.
Desk lamps can be difficult to retrofit with newer style bulbs, as they are smaller than typical table lamps. Desk lights that incorporate CFLs are readily available. Hanging light fixtures and those attached to ceiling fans are some of the easiest applications for CFLs. One of the best uses is directly over a kitchen or dining room table. Usually the shade is so wide that it won’t get in the way. It may even be possible to use a Y shaped two socket adapter and screw in two light bulbs if more light is desired.
Recessed can lights are limited by diameter, and sometimes cannot accept the wide ballast at the screw-in base of a CFL. The base depth is adjustable in some recessed cans. There are a number of special bulbs available now just for recessed cans.
